![]() John Darnielle's band, The Mountain Goats, is one of my favorite bands, and I wanted this to be a five-star book so badly. In the process, he is pulled back through time, tunneling toward the moment of his own self-inflicted departure from the world in which most people live.īrilliantly constructed, Wolf in White Van unfolds in reverse until we arrive at both the beginning and the climax: the event that has shaped so much of Sean’s life. But when they take their play into the real world, disaster strikes, and Sean is called to account for it. ![]() Lance and Carrie are high school students from Florida, explorers of the Trace. Their myths and plays were full of horrific parent-child relationships, from Zeus violently deposing Chronos, to Agamemnon slaying his only daughter, to Medea baking her boys into a pie to get back at their father, to the shocking fates of Oedipus and his immediate relatives. Many of us were raised on the treacly offerings of American television series such as Leave it to Beaver and The Partridge Family, in which fathers were strong, mothers were kind, and their offspring might be charming or goofy or even rascally, but were always healthy and, ultimately, good.Īs usual, the ancient Greeks had a clearer fix on things. The relationship between parents and children is idealised and sentimentalised in popular culture, or at least it used to be before Hollywood zeroed in on the teenage market and started to present children and childlike adults behaving badly. ![]() ![]() Small town love stories with happily ever afters guaranteed. But when she meets Augustus "Gus" Waters, a cancer survivor, her life completely changes. Our protagonist, Hazel Grace Lancaster, has been struggling with cancer for almost all her life. Normally, YA romance stories have me rolling my eyes at the cliché lines or unrealistic premises, but The Fault in Our Stars did not do that. I loved this book when I was in middle school, and as a high schooler, I'd still have to say that it's one of my favorites. The constant memorable and hard-hitting lines still linger in my mind from time to time, even after years of reading this novel. As an avid reader of John Green's works, Green's writing style continues to blow me away. A romance novel about a teen struggling with cancer, this story is down-to-earth, beautiful, and painfully sad. ![]() ![]() "About this title" may belong to another edition of this title.
